My Top Three Disadvantages To Formula Feeding.

Updated: Sep 10, 2020

What is the best way to feed your baby? There is so much debate about this. At the end of the day it all boils down to which method works for you. The reality is either method has pros and cons. I've addressed both of these with breastfeeding. (Check out those blogs and videos if you haven't already)I've also addressed the pros of formula feeding and how that method can work as well.

Now let's talk about the disadvantages to choosing formula.

What are the disadvantages?

During the first year of your baby's life it could cost about $1,500.00 to purchase formula for feedings. While breastfeeding is free. Many people wonder why formula costs so much? Many of the companies that produce formula put a lot into making sure that it comes as close to breastmilk as it possibly can. It takes a lot of research and production to do this. Add marketing and it pushes up the price tag so be sure to budget if you're going to formula feed.

2. Your baby's immune system.

Formula doesn't help boost your baby's immune system to help protect against certain viruses and bacteria. Formula has basic nourishment but it doesn't show that it protects against germs and other things such as GI and respiratory illnesses.

3. Your baby's changing needs.

Your baby has needs that change from day to day. Unlike breastmilk, formula can not change to meet those needs. Baby's pass "information" through their saliva that signals breastmilk to change according to what is needed. If your baby is sick, breastmilk changes to produce more antibodies and it also changes during growth spurts. Formula doesn't do that. So that is something to consider.

I've said this before and I will say it again, which ever method you choose, make sure it works for you and your baby. As long as your baby is getting what he or she needs and you are doing the best you can, that's what matters. Until next time,

Peace, love, and light
